What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers should only be administered by a fully qualified and experienced injector, so it is up to you to do your research thoroughly to make sure you are in safe hands. Andrew has been practising advanced aesthetic medicine procedures since 2007 and has a very high safety profile. Dermal Fillers are mainly composed of synthetically produced hyaluronic acid or poly-lactic acid, both of which are naturally occurring substances within the human body. For ethical reasons they are the number one choice since campaigners have been fighting against animal derived products being used within the beauty sector, therefore bovine collagen (from cows) is now a thing of the past. A major benefit of hyaluronic acid and poly-lactic acid is that it is chemically identical in all living organisms and therefore has no immunological properties so no sensitivity test (skin test) is required. The safety profile based on the manufacturers’ clinical studies have shown that allergic reactions are mild and transient and only of a swelling nature in 1/5000 patients. Any other reactions are very rare indeed.

How do Dermal Fillers work?

Dermal Fillers are injected into the sub layers of the skin to produce anti- ageing affects. Dermal Fillers, which are mainly composed of hyaluronic acid and come in various molecular weights which have been designed to treat specific areas. A small particle size is designed to reduce fine lines such as those around the eyes, known as ‘crow’s feet,’ and ‘smoker’s lines’ around the mouth and upper lip. A larger particle size is used to fill deeper lines such as the nasolabial folds know as smile lines, the glabella lines also known as ‘frown lines’ and are injected deeper.

Other areas which are often requested for enhancement are the cheeks and facial volume, the lips; in order to enlarge or to replace loss of volume as we age. They can be used to correct bone asymmetry, to define the jawline and to correct a receding chin. In the hands of an expert all types of procedures are possible so please get in touch and talk to us about your specific concerns.

What will I expect in my consultation and treatment?

During your consultation we will check your suitability for treatment and rule out the possibility of an allergic reaction, (sensitivity to hyaluronic acid) Some medications such as warfarin and asprin thin the blood and can worsen any bruising which may arise. If you are concerned about the risk of bruising, you will need to check with your GP whether there are any contraindications to you having a treatment. Your GP will let you know if your medication can be interrupted for a few days should the treatment be permitted.

The area to be treated is usually numbed with a topical numbing cream such as Emla. After the treatment, the area will appear a little red and can be slightly tender and can last up to 48 hours. It is advisable to have Dermal Fillers when you have no important engagements for up to two weeks post treatment as bruising can occur. Your treatment plan will be discussed, and recommendations given accordingly.

Dermal Fillers generally last between 12 and 18 months when correctly injected. The results appear natural and you will look refreshed.
