What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition which affects between 1-4% of the world’s population. Autoimmune is where the body attacks itself by mistaking normal cells as invader cells. In this case its attacking the melanocytes which are responsible for melanin production – the colouring of one’s skin. It is more noticeable in those with darker skins due to the higher contrast levels where the melanin is lacking. Vitiligo is where the skin’s appearance has been negatively affected by the absence of melanin making the skin appear patchy and blotchy.

How does Vitiligo and Scar Camouflage work?

Advanced skills are used to carefully blend pharmaceutical grade pigments to match the existing skin tones. We may use three or four different colour pigments to create variegated tones to give a very realistic outcome once healed. The chosen pigments will be skilfully implanted into the upper dermis. This will improve the overall appearance skin colouration. We also employ these application methods to camouflage post-surgery scarring whereby satisfactory results can be achieved. For your safety we only use single-use disposable needle cartridges, along with the latest in digital technology.

What will I expect in my consultation and treatment?

We will conduct a thorough consultation, so we may fully understand your expectations and to gauge whether this can be achieved. Your suitability for treatment will be evaluated and to make sure there are no contraindications which may prevent you from having the treatment. For your comfort we numb the area prior to treatment using a topical anaesthetic cream for 30-40 minutes then the infusion of selected colour pigments will begin.

We will be implanting the pigments using various needle configurations into the upper layers of the skin in order to create realistic results. After your initial treatment the pigmented areas will be quite sore and will appear darker than expected. It’s important to understand that these corrective camouflage procedures are more of an art than a science, therefore, more than one treatment may be required in order to achieve the full aesthetic result. Pricing is individual and a treatment plan will be carefully laid out before treatment begins.

After the treatment the pigmentation will appear slightly sore and darker than expected and will lighten over the 4-week healing period, so lightening is 40-50%. You must follow the aftercare advice very strictly for maximum retention of colour pigment. We will schedule a review appointment at a minimum of four weeks post procedure.
